The first airport was safdarjung and not Palam Airport/(IndraGandhi International Airport).
The Civil Aviation came to India around 1930s coinciding more or less with the well publicised flight of late Sh. J.R.D. Tata from Karachi to Bombay, as Mumbai was earlier known. The airlines were initially primarily used for carrying mail. The Tata Airlines was one of the earliest private airlines. The aviation scenario, however, remained largely subdued till the conclusion of the Second World War. After the war Tata Airline went public and named itself Air India in July 1946. It, however, continued to operate largely to the neighbouring countries of Ceylon and Pakistan.
It was only after independence that Govt. of India set up Air India International Limited and the first flight to London began in September, 1948. On August, 1, 1953 all the airlines were nationalised and Air India was merged with six other domestic operators.
The first airport of Delhi, the Safdarjung Airport, was built around 1930. During Second World War, Palam Airport was developed as an Air Force Station. With the increase in passenger traffic operations from Safdarjung were shifted to Palam in 1962. The passenger traffic until the late 70s was about 12 lakh per year which included about 7 lakh domestic passengers. Air passenger traffic after the 70s witnessed a world-wide growth and reached nearly six million, including 17 lakh international passengers.
In order to decongest the Palam Airport, the present International Airport, known as Indira Gandhi International Airport, Terminal-II was completed in April 1986 at a cost of Rs. 95 crores. The new airport was commissioned on May 1, 1986. When the terminal was opened it had 60000 sq. meters. of space, nearly 4 times that of the old airport. The building had a peak hour handling capacity of 3300 passengers as against 1600 in the old airport.
