My 3 year old son has to do a 24 hour urine test, and I know this is a little yucky, but the doctor never explained something to me that I just now started wondering about... When my son goes #2.. he pees, and I have to collect ALL the pee or the test is void and I have to start over again.. NOW.. how do I collect the pee when he goes #2 without contaminiating it???? Sorry for the grossness.

I have the bottle, and I know he has to pee into it. BUT when he sits down to #2.. he pees a little.. and my instructions say to make sure that every drop is collected.. I don't know about you, but it's not easy to pee into a bottle while you're sitting on the toilet.

It's not a test for sodium, it's for Cortisol. I have to do it at home. I can't sit at the hospital for 24 hours with him.

There are a couple of ways you could do this:
1. Do the best you can, as it sounds like you are, and accept that the collection will not be perect. In practice, it seems that very few adults even get it right! It may be worth doing a collection over 3 separate 24 hour periods to get an average (your doctor lab can supply the bottles)
2. I'm not 100% certain for cortisol, but I suspect its possible to do a cortisol/creatinine estimation. In this, a 'spot' sample of urine is assayed for cortisol and creatinine, and the ratio calculated. This gives a good index of 24 hour secretion of cortisol, since roughly the same amount of creatinine is produced and excreted each day.A problem with this may be that cortisol secretion varies over a 24 hour period.

Good luck.

You need to do what is called a clean catch, the urine needs to be collected prior to or with out a bowel movement. Give your son a large volume of fluid adn that should sole the problem! You could also make DOC do it!

Have him pee directly into the bottle. You should be doing this every time he pees.
