Study of any science subject is useless if not complimented with practical work.There is no use pursuing a distance education course in a research oriented field.Rest is up to you.

You can read 'Prey" by Michael Crichton for a very brief non-diploma crash course.

I dont think any univ would offer Nanotech thru distance education.
