I think because some look creepy and scary and some can bite or sting them. I am not afraid of them but I do keep my distance away from wasps and I kill black widow spiders that are too close for comfort. An entomology class piqued my interest in insects and I haven't seen them the same since.

Hahah! That depends on what insect you are talking about. It usually take a so called "traumatising" experience that we had when we were young and this experience IS THE ONE that makes us so afraid of something so small that could not even kill us.

For example... when i was young, I was never afraid of cockroaches and dragonfly. Until one day when the roaches decided to FLY into my skirt when i was jumping over it and the dragonfly decided to fly blindly and hit my eyes. Well, the latter did not affect me so much but the roaches sure did scare the hell out of me. Till to date. =P

Disease first and foremost and the fact that there are so many of them. It is almost impossible to keep them away from you and your home. I find insects interesting so it never bothered me. I think people fear spiders because they look so different and they sneak right up on you. Butterflies on the other hand can land on most people and they don't even flinch. I am amazed at how many refer to dragon flies as "sewing needles" and actually think they sting.

They r afraid of insects, since they are harmful. And some may not like the very sight of it though it may not be hazardous, like lizards, cockroaches, etc

They are not. Only 1st world people are. The rest of the world eats them like snack-food.

It is learned behavior along the lines like sex being dirty and boys can be studs but girls that do are sluts.
