There is a real laser weapon but last I checked it was still so large that it would be more like a tank weapon.

The tank mounted version exists in R&D versions. It is called the "Stingray" and is slightly classified as to it's current capabilities, and it is a laser cannon as opposed to a laser gun. There is also a version of a pumped laser cannon/directed energy weapon being tested in an airborne configuration designed to track and shoot down missiles. It has done poorly in tests so far, but the proof of concept works.
Would it surprise you to know that the military is also producing Directed energy SONIC powered weapons. If you ever gone to a rock concert and stood real close to the speakers for an hour, you know that very loud bass notes can make you queasy and your ears ring for days after the concert. Very high freq and very low freq's can cause internal damage.

There is such a thing. But it's not practical to use yet. I saw it on one of those "Future Weapons" shows. It was pretty powerful, but too big and heavy to be able to use effectively right now. Soon though....

The gun was easy , it's the power source that is oversized.
300 lb. batteries are hard to carry around on foot .
