I think they should have stern discipline and spankings (when warranted) but I would never "beat" or gag a child.
I agree with you. I'm tired of seeing people (especially in public places like the grocery store, for example) who let their children run amuk and wreak havoc. These parents either a) do nothing; or b) talk to them in a calm, soothing manner, which accomplishes nothing.
I have two young children (29 months and 13 months) and I've had a few iffy moments with my 29 month old. (Anyone who has a two-year-old knows what a "joy" they can be. At that age, NOTHING works because they're trying your patience. They're supposed to, actually.) I look at him very sternly and threaten to spank him if he doesn't straighten up. Nine times out of 10 it works. Kids aren't dumb...they know their limits, and they know when they're in control of a situation. It's the parents' fault for letting it get to this point.
This is barring any obvious medical mental issues the child has, of course.
I don't understand this time out garbage..."Now now Billy, you've been very naughty. Go sit in your chair for 5 minutes." (This is said in a soothing, lilting voice.) WTF does THAT accomplish. Yes, it might be hellish for a 5 year old to sit still for five minutes, but you know what...you pop them on their behind a few times and that'll teach them!
Growing up, I got spanked several times with my great grandmother's wooden spoon (from the kitchen). I remember learning how to behave VERY quickly. Talk about stinging!! I would NEVER have acted like the kids do these days. It's disgraceful! Parents are just too busy (in some cases) and they let their kids run wild and take over.

Right on! Anyone who thinks you can always reason with a child or use alternative methods needs to have their own head examined. A female dog will bite her puppies, and I wonder why? I realize humans are not dogs, but if you never bite your puppy, then they do as they please. If a child does not fear you, or respect you, then you have no control over this child. It grips my as- to see an out of control child raising hell and the parent just ignoring it. They act as though there is no problem. If a child has fear that you will kick their a-s, then they don't act like they want to. A child kicking, screaming, pulling things off the shelfs, and rolling around in the floor to get what they want is sick! There is some children that you can't do anything with, and they would do things if you beat them to death! It sometimes depends on the child, but most of the time its the lazy, stupid, ignorant, and dumb parent that buys into this carp that spanking a child is no good. I got whippings at home and school, and I turned out just fine. I very well remember NOT doing things because I was afraid of what my parents or school principle would do to me if they caught wind of me misbehaving. I thank them today for kicking my a-s, and I KNOW they were correct in doing so. For anyone to dispell this, and accuse them of abusing me, I will take it personally and tell them where to get off at! How can anyone say this is wrong??? I have respect for authority, and live an honest life. Is this not what we are after? Is this not what keeps people under control? You do what you were taught in life, and it can either be good or bad. People say that the reason there is child abuse is; they were abused as a child themselves. Horse Sh-t! Just how do they explain the ones that were never abused that kill their own parents in cold blood? I'm tired of the world being ran by $500 studies done in the back of some ******** office in BFE that has no merit what-so-ever! This might ruffle some feathers, but the reason for 99% of these so called ADD or attention type syndroms can be directly related to the 20 lbs of sugar and caffene they get through the 2 liters of soda they consume daily along with all the other junk bought by their parents who are too lazy to cook food. Remember children, you are what you eat!

I think they could do with discipline. Noone seems to bother about discipline anymore. I don't think beating them is a good idea, it's not necessary to use violence to raise a kid, but discipline is definitely a good thing.
I'm fed up with those lousy parents too. It's like nobody bothers actually raising their kids and teaching them about respect and manners anymore. Today's kids are out of control and don't have the slightest respect for anything or anyone. Whatever happened to parenting?

Fortunately for those who understand this point of view, these children have a 68.3% probability to be the future blue-collar workers of the nation, which provides cheap labor.
But being a bit more serious, children today don't have the benefits of the past, but rather, the potentially dangerous benefits of the future.
Computers can devastate your life as soon as a video of you doing something stupid goes out to the public.
So there's a give-and-take worthy of discussion.
But it's all up to the parents.
My suggestion would be for you to move to more educated cities/areas.
Let the garbage men handle the garbage.

personally---I think all of these immunizations that are mandatory for children are responsible for some of what we are seeing as
"Behavioral problems and bad parenting".
you really should read "Evidence of Harm" by Kirby
it will really make you think.
the bad guy--is an ingredient called thimerosol (mercury) used as a preservative in shots....in the last couple of years, it has been taken out of most shots(after being used for seventy years or so); however it can still be found in some flu shots and I believe....hepatitis shots.
Many renown Dr's believe it is responsible for the dramatic increase in Autism cases.....if autism...why not other neurological disorders?
Go to any elementary school and the nurses have bags of medications to administer to children.
The next time you see a child like that---look at the parents--are they frazzled and look like they've been through world war III?
*as for spanking them---you could literally beat these kids to death and it would have no effect.
don't judge--give them a smile

The majority of kids nowdays are totally out of control.
They do indeed need more stern discipline. I think one
solution possibly to the problem is for unruly kids to have
to go to one of these boot camps for hard to handle kids.
The former and or present drill instructors they have there
have a way to verbally adjust a bad kid's attitude without
laying a hand on them.

What are u talking about ? Must we teach our children everything under the sun starting "stern discipline, gags, and good o'beatings " ??? No good will come of that !
When u become frustrated & angry with your child, avoid name-calling or hurtful word... and for goodness' sake don't even think about stern discipline, gags or beatings ! Kids are kids !
Why don't u make an extra effort to set a good example at home and in public with words like "I'm sorry" , "thank u" , "please"...

Absolutely. I never was like that. Drastic kids require drastic measures.
Further, teachers should be allowed to do more discipline at schools.
Kids have too many "rights". As long as the parent is providing food, shelter, and love, they should also be able to smack their kid if the situation calls for it.

You will never have to give your child a "good old beating" if they were taught right when they were young. There are no bad children, only bad parents. A child only learns what it sees.
