No one system works for everybody. Nicotine patches and gum work for many, but it can be hard to disengage yourself from them. You will need support from family and friends, and unfortunately many of your Army colleagues may think it good sport to get you hooked again. (This is the same perversity you find with those around drug addicts and alcoholics: and it's like the guys who yell at a potential suicide hanging from a roof to "Jump!"

I know many people who have quit. It takes commitment and (as I said) the support of those around you. You need not pay for an expensive course. There are free and cheap self-help groups. Try Nicotine Anomymous.

Alan Carr's "How to Stop Smoking" is really good, I gave them up for 2 weeks from reading it, I only went back on them cos I wanted to, but if you want to quit the book will work.
