im looking for some good software that will allow me to view and perhaps delete index.dat files on my computer.

I haven't tried this myself, but if you have a "new" account that you don't use, you could try [1] to look for the "new" index.dat from the "OLD" account (it should be 32kB); [2] copy it and save it somewhere; [3] then log out of the "old" account, log on to the "new" one, copy the SAVED index.dat file and paste it in the content.ie5 folder of the old account; [4] click yes to REPLACE FILE

this should work because you're replacing a full log with a blank one. hey if this works all you have to do is start from step [3] next time!

You will not be able to view index.dat files. They are stored in compressed binary format. To find and delete them, you can use Search option from Start menu. Specify index*.dat as file name and look in all folders/drives. From the results pane, you can delete the files.
