I know they were invented for a useful reason, indicating to fire crews that there is a child on board in case of an accident, but now people leave them in all the time. Pointless.
And now there are ones that say 'Back off, baby on board'. Are they assuming I'm a reckless driver and will listen to their preaching?
Seems to me me they just want to boast about about their family fertility and general superiority.
Sorry, but they're tossers.

R R. I would agree if they were used properly.

It distinguishes the targets from the non-targets, right?
Ouch, I feel a violation coming on...
EDIT: you know what annoys me more? When I am walking in a busy shopping street and some broad with an extra ultra extended babycarrier on wheels won't budge just because SHE got knocked up and pooped out a baby.
"I'm walking here with a baby!"
That's what they tell you when you try to move past them without budging.
"You should have used a condom then, you wouldn't have that problem." is my standard reply.

Yes well I am not sure that I understand your gripe. I would have thought that any indication of a precious cargo aboard, would indicate that due care of attention should be taken when approaching that vehicle. Even more so if the person driving in front is driving at a speed that is likely to cause frustration. In this situation is it likely that the driver of the car following will blast their car horn, and try and overtake, because of their own frustration. Frustration can lead to road rage which is a recipe for disaster, but patience is a virtue don't you think?
I am sure you are both a safe driver and considerate driver so it should it make any difference as to whether there is a baby on board at the precise moment you encounter the vehicle. The scenario will be that there has been a baby on board some part of the day or night. Realistically do you expect someone to keep removing the sticker for your benefit. No! of course not, you are just rattled at the moment so go and take a Siesta or have a child then you will understand more fully the reason for these stickers.
Another Edit: Some of you have strange ideas. Perhaps the child on board stickers are different in the States than there are in the UK. Ours are unobtrusive yet noticeable to other road users. Sounds like the ones in the States are monstrous.

I used to think that these signs were pointless, I mean 'so what?' I thought it was to make people drive differently when they saw the sign. That was until we stopped at an accident where the car had crashed and was on fire under the bonnet, some other helpful souls were there too and had pulled an old lady and her thirty-something daughter out, they were both unconscious and we were waiting for the emergency services to arrive. Luckily one observant person saw one of these signs in the back of the car and went to have a closer look, there was a car seat in the back of the car but you couldn't see it through the back window. The car seat was dragged out as the car was engulfed in flames, the baby stayed in hospital for a week or so due to smoke inhalation but had the sign not been noticed that little girl would have definately died along with her grandmother. So, yes, they do look stupid and they do make you think 'so what' but if they are used correctly they can actually save lives if people actually acknowledge the real reason that they are there for!!!!

I used to have one.
Was one of the morons who kept it in the car all the time too.
Then felt guilty one day, because it dawned on me that if I did have an accident and the car seat was empty and the sticker was still up, some poor sod would be fruitlessly searching for a baby that wasn't in the car!
Removed after enlightenment.
They really don't make a difference and can be irritating to some...
You can even buy ones that say: "PORN STAR on board" and that was in Morrison's. Now how sad is that?

I can't believe some of these answers like the person that says they would drive more aggressively, really ,come on how would you feel, if you got into an accident and killed a baby! Think before giving a totally stupid answer!

If they were used responsibly - i.e. removed if there was no baby on board and positioned so that they cause the minimum possible obstruction to the driver's vision (off-side rear side window, perhaps), then I would have no problem with them.
However, when they are a large plastic triangle stuck 4 inches from the edge of the rear screen (obscuring enough of the view behind to hide two children in), with no babies in the car, then the driver should be fined - it should be as illegal as displaying "L" plates when the learner isn't driving.

hey do you have kids?? maybe no. Well i have 3 and i don't have a baby on board sign as they don't do a thing for us!!!! If the person behind the steering wheel can drive there should be no problem. But saying that when my children were babies i did have one. Just another thought, so you have a sticker on your car/truck like save the dolphins or something or baseball/football teams you support? Cause if you think about it they are the same whatever literature are on the sticker it is still warning or trying to get your attention of something. So think about it!!!!

No, I disagree. I have kids but do not have a baby on board sticker, even though I have 2 under 2years old. Think they're far more appropriate than stickers of "babe on board" with some middle aged tart driving....also more appropriate than stupid jokes..or even worse..the symbol of Christianity, who gives a **** if a christian is on board..knowing a child is on board the car in front would make me watch my speed..a christian wouldn't (and before anyone has a go) I'm a Christian too ....apparently.

yes , they are riduiculous. All drivers should still treat all passing cars with same care regardless there is a baby or not. You are right about it's usefulness but many just leave it on and poor firemen having to find a 'missing' baby when it's at home or grown up now! There are new signs bore out of this, making light of things which is funny but it also undermime our safety/seriousness at the same time. It is sad that most people boast about their children... it means they have nothing better to do with their lives!

The only time they seem to be any good is in a car park. People tend to give you more access if you have one!
Why do you take it so personally? I don't use mine as a boast of fertility, my son does that perfectly well enough on his own!
And no, I don't consider myself to be Superior!
Tossers???? You sure?

Being neither a driver nor a parent, I feel it would be inappropriate to comment. So here goes. Yes. I hate them. But not as much as I hate those bloody fishes that the god-squad have. Or the even more annoying 'small person on board'. And England flags. If you've got one you should top yourself.
