I lift weights 3 times a week and ride a stationary bike 5 times a week for 30 min. I lift weights for about 30 to 45 min. also. I want to take a supplement containing protein to build muscle. I'm not trying to get "buff", I just want to get toned and firm. How much protein should I consume? Is Designerwhey o.k? It has 18g of protein in each scoop. Thanks to those who take this question seriously & give me good advice..
:-)

Three servings of low fat Yogurt should be enough.

Drink a lot of low fat milk also. Resberry smoothies are good too.

Peace baby.

Yes, Whey protein is safe for a woman to take. Basically, Whey protein is the leftover process of making cheese. There's not much difference in it versus drinking excess milk (although Whey has a higher ratio of protein than milk).

You want to get about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. So if you weigh 100 pounds, you want 100 grams a day. It might be slightly less for women, but I think it's a good goal to shoot for.

Whey protein isn't a magic supplement -- it's just protein. Use it when a convenient meal isn't available.

I've used Designer Whey before and it was okay. Lately, I've been buying the Body Fortress stuff (it is super cheap). Some of the whey proteins are fortified, so you pay extra for it. Depends upon what you think you need.

Good luck.

First of all, do not worry about putting on too much muscles. It is difficult for women to have too much muscle simply unless you are on illegal stuff. Second, if you want to get toned and firm, please realise that only muscle can be toned and firm, i.e. you must have some muscle mass. If you are working out intensely and from your programme, it appears that you are, I would suggest 1 gm of protein for each lb of body weight.

Designer Protein is ok but remember that it is just a supplement - i.e. you should continue to eat whole foods and use whey to supplement your diet. Try to stick with whole grains, fish, lean meats, lots of fruits and vegetables.

It is all about shoot and miss. You have to find the supplement that works best for you. Remember that protein alone does not build muscles. You do also need carbohydrates. Any form of exercise is going to get you toned and the correct eating plan is going to be of a great help. The best advice is to go and see a doctor or a nutritionist. They would be the best people to help you. I did and I managed to lose 30kg in eight months. All due to my eating plan and exercise program. Good luck.
