I was driving to dinner with a friend tonight, only to notice, about two miles from her house that the check engine light was on. I have oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc... Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm taking it to AutoZone tomorrow to get a code for it, but any help now would be FANTASTIC! Thank you!!

I'm almost positive it's a mark IV. It didn't come with a book/manual... anything when I bought it. I've only had it for a month, and I'm sure it's nothing huge seeing as how I need to give it a tune up anyways. Guess I know what I'm doing on my day off now!

It could be anything from a lose gas cap to a mis-fire in your engine. the light has nothing to do with oil, coolant, brake fluid or anything like that. Its main purpose is the emission control system. So in most cases it has to do with is how clean your car runs. To ignore it for long is never a good idea as the longer it goes the more damage it can cause. Autozone is not the best place to check for things like that. I know they offer free code reading, however there is more to it than just what the code says.
What if there is something else causing that problem? Does the guy at Autozone have any idea how the code came about and what else could cause that problem? The best bet is to find someone in your area that knows VW's and can find out not only what set the light but what else may have caused it.

welcome to the world of volkswagens. It could be about 100 different things. Personally, ive had my CEL on for all 2 years ive had my 97 gti. I get worried when it goes off, because then soemthing is about to break. I get it from all kinds of stuff. scan the code at autozone, then goto www.vwvortex.com and search for threads (including in the archive) pertaining to that code. there will prob be 3-4 minimum about that code.

also, is it a mark3 or mark4 golf? They switched models that year.

You might try changing the plugs, and using a MINIMUM of 89 octane for the car. 87 grade is for lawnmowers, not cars.

Mine has gone off due to a blocked inline fuel filter.
