It started with CD which was an acronym for "corps diplomatique", the French diplomatic corp which had posh cars.
I guess CDX is a liitle bit better.

It is the trim and equipment level.
Assuming it is a Toyota you are referring to (having asked the question in the Toyota section), the cheapest version of the model you are considering was probably the GS, then there was a GLS (with more equipment) and then the CDX (with yet more equipment, and probably more-luxurious seat cloth).
Different manufacturers use different names for their trim levels, and change them quite frequently. Toyota no longer use these names - a CDX was probably the equivalent of a T4 or TSpirit model today.

If in Vauxhall / Opel terms then it's normally reserved for the SECOND top of the range base specification.
LS - luxury means velour seats, wind down windows & a radio cassette
GLS - Oooh! Maybe a sunroof & electric windows too.
CD - Electric seats, maybe a bit of leather, windows, maybe sunroof, CD radio, air con...except the fun stuff....
CDX - Probably leather, FULL electric seats, heated, auto dipping mirror, climate control, cruise control.
ELITE - The works, heated leather electric seats, electric rear blind, auto dipping mirror, climate control, premium sound system, sat nav, cruise control,...and ALL of the toys.
The SXi & SRi and the SPORTS upgrades and normally come in around the CD or CDX mark for equipment.

Suppose it's a Vauxhall you're thinking of buying???
It's regarding the specifications!!
You have the basic...then a bit better than the basic is an LS...then you have the luxury CDX..then it's the SXi...then the SRi.....more specifications in the car....i.e. more things as standard...like electric windows....air con.....fog lamps...as standard rather than having to pay extras for them.
