In Matthew 4:7 (NIV), Jesus tells Satan, "It is written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test'." But those who really know their Bible stories may be familiar with this scripture as well...

Malachi 3:10 (NIV), "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

So my questions are:
1. Do you believe what Malachi 3:10 says about tithing? What is your take on this scripture.
2. What is tithing to you? Do you feel that tithing is more than monetary- meaning you give 10% of everything to God including your time? Or is tithing obsolete and/or does not apply to modern times?
3. Is tithing feasible in this day and age? Why or Why not?
4. Have you "tested" God? Do you tithe? If so, have you seen the blessings promised by God in Malachi 3:10.

Wow...nice question.

Yes, I tithe, its a part of membership at the church I go to.

1.) I do believe this is a good thing, and yes I have seen blessings come after consistent and/or increased tithing.
2.) To me tithing is about sacrifice and giving from the heart. Even if I don't make a lot, giving a tenth is right because God has blessed me with what I have.
3.) Its definitely feasible. It has to be feasible.
a.) If you attend a church, things have to be paid, whether the members want to tithe or not. Mortgage payments, property tax, utilities, maintenance. etc. Also, its my opinion that the lead evangelist, preacher or priest should recieve some form of payment if he is full-time so he himself can provide for his family, transporation needs, groceries, utilties, rent or mortgage, etc.
4.) I've increased my tithe before with the hopes something good will happen to me financially and about 90% of the time it does and sometimes it really gets blown out more than I could ever hope for.

BY THE WAY - ITS TAX DEDUCTIBLE. JUST ANOTHER BENEFIT!

Actually the two scriptures quoted, and specifically the term "test" refer to two completely different words and concepts in Aramaic and Latin languages. They've simply been re-interpreted in your version of the Bible to appear to be the same word in English.

In Matthew 4:7 the more correct English word is to "tempt," meaning to induce action through deceit.

In Malachi 3:10 the more correct English word is to "prove," meaning to witness a promised response to righteous obedience and behavior.

The concept of tithing, in this day is just as feasible as it was then, as long as it's God who's requiring it, rather than man. Are there people on earth today who speak for God? I know I'd be hesitant to step up to that one. But if there were, and I believed they actually did speak for something or someone I could accept as God, I would follow the dictates of righteousness.

On the flip-side, I'd never presume to tempt God.

I do tithe. I give to the poor, and I don't pass up an opportunity, if I have the means, to provide financial benefit to churches, individuals, and good causes.

And yes ..... My life has been blessed abundantly.

Wow, a valid question, thank you...

Firstly, the particular Bible verse you quoted from the Gospel of Matthew is talking about a different subject, not tithing.

Secondly, I believe that Bible verse from the book of Malachi because it has happened to me numerous times. I have given tithes and strangely I was blessed in some way.

Thirdly, tithing is not obsolete, in my opinion, GOD's convenants are eternal. I believe tithing is more than just monetary as well.

Fourthly, yes, tithing is feasible, at least for me.

Finally, see second answer.

Well first of all there is a lot more verses on tithing but yes I believe in it. My parents take 10% for it and we still think it applies because there are still people out there that need help. However they do not give it to a church. We do not go to a certain church and our old one used all the money on things like cabinet upgrade and stuff. My family keeps the money until we see that there is an opportunity that we think God would want us to use it for. For example, there was a guy that became sick and then went blind. He then lost his job because of it therefore not being able to pay for his two room apartment with a wife and four kids. The kids didnt even have beds or pillows :( Things like this

I believe the scripture. I also believe 10% is minimum personally. 100% of all I have is the Lord's. I also believe according to Paul's words about God loving a cheerful giver and if you are going to give grudgingly that you might as well not give at all because it all comes down to the heart motivation.

God has blessed me tremendously in more than monetary or tangible ways. When I do tithe, my money seems to miraculously go further than when I don't. I've gotten up to $1,500, unexpected anonymous checks in the mail, a vehicle, and all of my needs met in one way or another.

I thank the Lord Jesus that He provides all I need always. Everything I have is His time, money, talents, treasures, my life, my children.......everything.

Those are a lot of questions to answer. I'll tell you about me.

- I was raised as a believer (Catholic). My family tithed during my childhood. When I married and moved out (18 yrs old), I tithed because that was part of my faith and because of the example of my parents, whom I trusted. I knew that God had instructed it and my church expected it (10%), but I did not know the Bible for myself. My husband is a non-believer and did not understand or fully agree with tithing, so at that time, I tithed about 1% of my OWN income.
- Later, as I started to study the bible and grow in faith, I found out for myself about where tithing is called for...I began to trust and stepped out in faith to tithe 5% and on up to 10%. I shared with my husband what I believed (from the heart this time, not from doctrine) and he trusted in my judgement, so he supported the idea, even though our budget was VERY tight or sometimes in the negative.
- I no longer attend the Catholic church, so giving feels a little different, because it's not expected (as in a monthly bill). Near the last 7 years of attending the Catholic church, I was giving with my heart and trusting God to use the money for his purpose, not just the Church's. But it's all about the heart. If you give with an expectancy of a return, you may be giving for the wrong reason. If you give because you believe that everything you own is God's anyway and He only asks us to give back 10%, it is easy, joyful giving.
- God has proven to be there again and again for us. Not always in money, but in all types of blessing. Whenever I step up the giving, I always feel replenished by the Lord's provisions. And tithing isn't only about finances, God wants the assets that are most precious to us, like TIME, energy, and just reaching out to other's on His behalf.
- YES, I believe in scripture and was long ago made aware that we are not to test God in any area except for in tithing. It's true that you can't OUTGIVE God!
- I no longer work and now my husband owns his own business and even though we are scraping by and all the income comes from him, he still allows the tithings to flow. He's still not saved, but I like to think of him as a pre-Christian. Basically, what I do to determine our tithing amount is, I calculate how much money we NEED to meet all the bills, gas, and food for the month and I tithe 10% or more of that, so in a sense, I guess I am "testing" God, but it feels more like "trusting and obeying".

Everything we have belongs to God. And God expects us to give back to him. The tithe is what keeps his church going. The tithe isn't really so much about the money as obeying God and what he has told us to do. He has told us to tithe. Why question him?
Yes I tithe when I receive money (I don't have a job at the moment.) Tithing isn't just money either. It is giving what you have. If you were a farmer your tithe may be vegetables not money. As a child your tithe could be helping someone in your church. We have been given a command by God and we are to follow it.

Emphatically..YES! I have seen the blessings brought about by tything..not just income but time as well..The Sabbath is a tythe of our time. From sunset Friday night to sunset Saturday..minus the 8 hours needed for sleeping is exactly about 10% of a week. There is no way it can be obsolete even if there were no realized blessings gleened from giving. In American and some other parts of the world...we do not suffer as the poorer undeveloped countries..we are already blessed so it is our responsibility to share, care, nurture and give and in doing so..it eases the suffering of someone somewhere. That is what Jesus wanted for us to do and how we show that we care for our neighbors. Love in Christ, ~J~ <><

1. yes. the Lord promises us that if we trust in Him and are willing to give back a part of what He gives us, He'll take care of us.
2. tithing is exactly what it says, 10% of what you have or make. Malachi refers to physical tithes, money or goods. time is a matter of our own concince.
3. yes it is, the LDS church (mormon) is very serious about the need to pay a full and honest tithe, as well as 'offerings' to care for the poor.
4.yes, I have, and yes, I do. and I have never had to go without. in fact, the ONLY times in my life when I've really had to struggle with money are the times when I'm behind on paying my tithing. as soon as I pay it, something always comes up that lets me cover my expenses. the Lord keeps His promises.
