Tyson's main problem was that he came from the streets, he was dirt poor, but he had an incredible talent. Suddenly he's making shitloads of money. No wonder it screwed him up a bit. It's happened to sportsmen from all walks of life - look at Diego Maradona. Had Tyson stayed focussed on his first true love, boxing, he could have been a greater champ than ANYONE. Yeah, I do feel sorry for him, but not that much. A guy that bites an opponent's ear because he's losing doesn't deserve too much sympathy.

It's already been said but how many chances does a guy get to straighten out his life?? Think about it, a third grade educated individual was given an incredible body in which to make more than $100 million dollars during his boxing career. To enjoy a life style that most can only imagine. Instead of appreciating his position, he surrounds himself with the worse possible elements of society. During the entire time he continued to make bad decisions and put himself above the law. And during this time he has managed to send every penny he's made and then some. Don't feel sorry for him. The reality of it is that he is a street thug. If not for boxing he would be either a lifer in prison or already dead.

G'day Rick Zenbach,
Thanks for the question.
In one way, I feel sorry for him although he has been the architect of his own misfortune,
His once immensely promising career was undermined by serious personal problems, lack of preparation, and periods of imprisonment. Upon release following his first prison sentence, he made a heavily anticipated comeback, but failed to reclaim his previous dominance. On June 11, 2005, Tyson suffered a defeat to journeyman Kevin McBride, and shortly thereafter retired from the sport.
In August 2003, after years of financial struggles, Tyson finally filed for bankruptcy. His bank balance was said to have been only $5,000. He had been paid millions. He was also named by Ring Magazine at number 16 among the 100 greatest punchers of all time.
On the front page of USA Today on June 3, 2005, Tyson was quoted as saying: "My whole life has been a waste - I've been a failure." He continued: "I just want to escape. I'm really embarrassed with myself and my life. I want to be a missionary. I think I could do that while keeping my dignity without letting people know they chased me out of the country. I want to get this part of my life over as soon as possible. In this country nothing good is going to come of me. People put me so high; I wanted to tear that image down."
He now has to find ways of earning an income for the rest of his life.
I enclose sources for your reference.
Regards

I'm a big boxing fan. Personally, I don't like Tyson even though I have all of his fights on dvd. He's gifted boxer but wasted most of his earnings through bad decisions. Could have gone on to become one of the top 5 heavyweights in history if he made right decisions. Great boxer to see though cause you don't know what he's going to do next. Very unpredictable and entertaining to watch. Don't feel sorry for him though.

A jury disagreed. Look, Mike Tyson is the biggest waste of talent in the history of boxing. He's a grown man who made all the decisions that led to his downfall. No pity here..

I reckon everyone gets the chance in life for many things. We go to school to learn and decide our future, we choose to be good or bad. Tyson got a chance that most of us can only dream of and if he took it for granted and made mistakes then the only one I feel sorry for are his fans and supporters. He might think its his choice but when you're in a position to be a role model to millions you gotta take responsibility. Oh yeah and he gets paid millions too. WASTE!

You know, I do feel sorry for him. He lost his mentor at a very young age, and his life seemed to slowly fall apart afterwards. That is the only thing that kept him under control. At the other end of the spectrum, he should of been mature enough to take respsonibility for his actions. He should of used the death of his mentor as motivation not as the end of his career. He had all the skills in the world; awesome power, amazing speed. But a head full of crap.

I do. But a jury disagred with your last statement. I sympathize with many sports personalities, popular musicians and successful people who have no guidance and so easily lose what they have earned in their profession. But by contrast many of us- ordinary people- also suffer devastating losses and receive no sympathy from the world. Each year thousands lose their homes in foreclosure, their jobs to downsizing and their savings and pensions to the unfavorable financial climate or crooked business persons. So my best advice to fans of Tyson is not to become emotionalyy wrapped in his or any one else success.
