i mean we need the before best or not?

The correct sentence is
There are several good students in the class but John is the best

Remember 2 general principals of English: -

(1) Never start a sentence with "BUT".
(2) When using a superlative degree, it always needs "the" before it. eg, "This is the most intelligent question asked". "You are the finest member of yahoo answers", etc.

There are a few exceptions to this rule but generally the superlative degree precedes with "the".
