Medical names for toes are the Phalanges. The bones that joins them on to your foot are the Metarsals and the bones in the ankle are called the Tarsals. Big toe's main purpose in life is for balance. My Grandfather lost his big toe in an accident with a water pump he was still able to walk however he used a different part of his foot (side on the sole). I hope that helps.
