Our family is thinking of going on a vacation... we've already been to Disneyland twice... is Universal Studios a good place to go? Are there rides there, or is it just 3D movies? What places can we go that is driveable from NorCal? (We want to stay in CA)

I would not suggest planning a whole trip around Universal Studios. Its a fun place if you are already in the area... but you can see and do everythign in teh park in one day!

Universal Studios is a fun place to go I have been there several times and I don't remember a lot of rides but you can go into the studio lot on the tram and catch a pretty good show (Jurassic Parks) at their theater.
If its rides you want after you spend the day at Universal Studios get a hotel for the night.
Then head to Magic Mountain. Directions from Universal Studios to Magic Mountain :
Take the 101 Freeway north to the 170 Freeway north. Take the 170 Freeway north to the Interstate 5 Freeway north (the 170 Freeway automatically ends at the I-5 north). Take Interstate 5 north to Magic Mountain Parkway. Exit Magic Mountain Parkway, left at traffic signal at the bottom of the exit ramp going under the Freeway overpass. Proceed along Magic Mountain Parkway to Parking Toll Booths and entrance to Six Flags California.
I suggest you spend at least one day and night at the Studios and then go to Magic Mountain its probably 1.5 hours from the Studio.I am not sure about hotels around Magic Mountain I suggest you check this out so you are not driving around in the dark trying to find a place to sleep. You will be pretty tired after Magic Mountain.
Have Fun!

There are like two rides there. One of them being Jarrasic Park, which was really cool! They dinosaurs looked so good and the drop was excellent! The rest is 3D movies and live shows. We recently went there, it was fun but we did everything in one day so we probably wont be going back soon since we saw everything so quickly. The tour was awesome though! They take you to see all the movie sets and you even get to see Jaws up close. (He was cheesy looking, but it was fun anyways) Don't go if you don't like just looking at things, because that's mostly what we did all day, watch shows. They have pretty good shows, like they show you how they do CG effects and stuff like that.

There are rides at Universal Studios. But there are 2 sections of the park of Universal Studios, the actual thrill rides, and the others are like studio/3Dmovies kind of thing. What i mean by studio kind of thing is like they show you what is going on behind the scenes, or "experience" a tornado from that movie. So the two parks are two completely different things.

They have a roller coaster ride and a log ride. The roller coaster ride is the Mummy which is indoors and is very fun. It goes backwards after it goes forwards. It's comparable to Space Mountain at Disneyland. The other ride is Jurassic Park. You see dinosaurs that look real and move. all this while your riding in the water. They also splash and squirt water at you, so plan to get wet. Then there is the usual log ride drop at the end. This one is funner than most.

How old are your kids? If they're still really young, I suggest you go to Legoland in Carlsbad, CA. Little kids don't enjoy Universal Studios as much.

I would go to Six Flags in Valencia unless you have small children then Universal is probably best.
