Chances are the baby doesn't have Downs Syndroms, tell her not to worry about it yet. All's the ultrasound will be able to tell her is if the baby has the heart defect that usually goes along with Downs, but there are a lot of people with Downs who do not have the heart defect. An amnio would be the only way to tell her for sure. Otherwise she would have to wait until the baby is born. If she does end up having a baby with Downs there are wonderful Early Start programs that work with the baby from the very beginning. These children usually require physical therapy and speech therapy very young, but wil the proper services they usually walk and talk just fine. As far a s cognitive delays go it really varies. Soem end up with severe mental retardation, while other's may just have mild MR. Like I said she really shouldn't worry about it yet. Her chances, even at 30, are very slim.

The chances of having a Down's Syndrome baby go up as we get older; I'm sure there is nothng she has done to increase her chances.

Still, 1% is very small; in fact, since no doctor can guarantee a 0% chance, these are the best possible odds she could have!

Lots of 30 year old and older have happy healthy babies. I am not sure how reliable the sonogram will be but they should have done and alpha fetal protien test that would show if it were possible and those can have false results. The only 100% test is the amnio. I wish her the best. She shouldn't let herself get stressed it's bad for the baby. Take it one day at a time.

The physician can take a sample of the amniotic fluid in her womb through a process known as amniocentesis. Because Down's Syndrome is a genetic disorder, the doctor can test the fluid and tell your friend if her baby will be normal.

Well tell here its just 1% there is still a 99% chance she wont have a baby with downs syndrome. Remeber God doesnt give you more than you can handle. Just tell her to pray about it. Eveyrhting will be fine.

wait for the ultrasound result. she'll be able to watch and i'm sure she have a lovely experience. a 1 percent chance is very low and down syndrome children can be very loving. besides there are many degrees of the condition from slight to severe.

1% chance is very very low. I think she might not end up with Down Syndrome. I also think she is quite young so nothing to worry about.

1% is not much to worry about. An amnio is going to be able to tell her more than an ultrasound. I'd say relax...1% is nothing to worry about
