Odor is a strong indicator.
Obvious particulate matter.
Discoloration.

There are other contaminants which produce none of these indicators.

Generally nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea would cover most symptoms. But I think researching specific water borne illnesses would result with more defined symptoms. For example Cholera, Typhoid Fever, and Hepatitis. From my personal experience, I fell ill to cryptosporidium, a parasite that plagued the Milwaukee waters. It was a bad case of diarrhea caused by the Milwaukee's inability to properly treat the outgoing sewage at the rate that it was coming in, thus overloading the system.

The general symptoms that come from drinking contaminated water are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, there are several different illnesses you can get from drinking contaminated water. One of the most common is Giardiasis (Giardia). Symptoms of Giardia are lethargy, explosive diarrhea, upset stomach, cramps, loss of appetite, bloating, and flatulence. The onset of symptoms is normally 1 or 2 weeks after drinking the water. There are however other illnesses you can get from drinking contaminated water but I will leave that research up to you.

i dont think you can really tell just by looking at the water really, apart from the obvious if its discolored, got bits n stuff in it or smells like someone already said, because bugs cant be seen!

unless your talking about people who have drank the contaminated water, we had a situation like this a few months back where one of the water supplies was contaminated with cryptosporidiosis and people were ill, with stomach pains, diorrhea and vomiting and stuff, but get proper facts and figures dont just rely on yahoo answers.
