The hole in your mouth where the tooth was pulled gets infected.

A dry socket is an infection of the bone where the tooth was (the socket). It occurs when a proper clot does not form in the socket after the extraction. To prevent it, follow the care instructions you were given to the letter! Do not smoke, spit, or take anything through a straw. Take antibiotics if they were given to you. Don't disturb the area (for example, by brushing) for a day or 2. If a dry socket forms, it will take between 3-5 days after the surgery - and you will know it if it starts! If it does, go back to the doctor that did the surgery - it's a pretty easy fix, but best to avoid it if possible.

Dry Socket is a condition when you have a tooth extracted and the blood clot "falls" out of the open socket where the tooth once stood. When the jawbone and or nerves are exposed to the air it makes for a very painful experience.
Do not suck on straws, or smoke because that causes suction, enough to loosen the clot.

The only thing the oral surgeon did for me was to "pack" the open wound with gauze soaked with clove oil. It tastes nasty and the condition is extrememly painful. but the "packing" did the trick for me.

A dry socket is any socket in which a patient is having pain due to the loss of the blood clot thus exposing the bone to air, food, and fluids along with an offensive odor. This often occurs two or more days after an extraction and can last about 5-6 days. It is normal to have soreness and discomfort following an extraction.

Oh, do I EVER know what a dry socket is!!
I was a teenager and had my wisdom teeth pulled. What normally happens is.... there is this big hole where your tooth was. So it fills with blood and forms a clot and it sort of hangs out there and the hole heals up. Well, if you suck on a straw or do something in your mouth that causes the clot formation to be sucked out of your little hole, then there is nothing inside it to protect it and all your nerves are just exposed!!! It hurts like a MUTHA. So be careful to rinse gently and sip and swallow carefully so that area can heal properly. (I never had stitches. I think a "Dry socket" is less likely to happen if you have stitches."

I was on Sring Break (live in CA, went to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break - that's a long way!) when it happened. I phoned my dentist and he called in a prescription for pain meds for me to a local pharmacy and I went and picked it up. It's not a big deal to your mouth, it just means a lot of pain for a while.

Dry Socket is a post extraction condition and can ONLY be treated by pain-killers and time. Wisdom teeth are the most difficult extractions realized due to the deep roots that must be literally ripped form their embedded sockets in the jaw bone by violent pulling and rocking motions, using a tool better left unseen by the patient...I trust you were put to sleep BEFORE the extraction? Nevertheless you'll live.

Dry sockets are tooth sockets that the blood clot has been "sucked" out of. This is why your dentist asked you not to drink from a straw for a while. It exposes the cut nerve from theold tooth to air and is VERY painful. My bro and I had our wiz teeth out the same day, and he insisted on drinking a juice box when we got home. He sucked so hard on that little straw that he dislodged a clot. He actually went back to the dentist that afternoon... I don't know how he fixed it, but it wasn't nice...

Dry Socket is awful and I've had it. It happeneds randoms, with no rhyme or reason, to people. It is when you aveloer bone does not heal right. It happens when a blod clot ruptures. They put cloves in the holes to make you feel better, but it tastes gross!

it is when the blood clot has come out of the hole where the tooth was pulled and the nerve is exposed. hope you don't have one. very painful and must be addressed by the dentist immediately.

You will get a blod clot where the tooth was. This should heal and make the gum smooth. If this blod clot comes out, you will have a big hole there...
