just be yourself.
He likes you for what you are,you need not be extra intimate to show him you care.As you say,he's your good friend already, then go the same cool and friendly way like always....just let him feel you care,by little words of extra concern...helping him out a little more than a friend would...and he'll read your love himself.
After all,"deeds speak louder than words"
Good luck!

First things first... ALWAYS be yourself! You may get nervous when you're around him but thats because you are being yourself, that's you. Everyone gets butterflies now and then. But, if we don't accept that feeling than how could we build confidence.
Second, if you two are already friends than you already have a head start. You already know the types of things he likes, and though you may not like all of them take the time to learn about them. EVERY "friendship" requires understanding of one another.
As you learn more about these things you'll have more to talk about with him. More talk equals more time... with HIM! And who knows you might end up discovering you like some of those things to.
Finally, just go with the flow. Don't rush things or you risk scaring him off as a friend and possible boyfriend.

Just Try Not To Concentrate On That He Likes You Or That You Like Him. Just Pretend Hes Just One Of Your Friends And Have A Good Time And Have Fun! And Dont Be Afriad Of Him, When Your Walking Walk Beside Him Talk To Him.

I have some of the same problems.... especially with the tensing up thing.... in fact, the quickest way to make me uncomfortable around you is to tell me you're interested in me or you're attracted to me.
My advice, take it slow. I've noticed that... if I really feel comfortable with the person (which takes many months for me) I don't have a problem letting them know i'm interested. And don't be embarassed about liking him... it's perfectly normal.
Invite him to do fun things... that require talking... new things, especially. Miniature golf? Skydiving, if that's your thrill? Anything either of you have expressed interest in.... give it a try...

Just try to be yourself(your confident self) and things should go fine. He is probably nervous too. A little nervousness is normal, just play it by ear and be natural. Stay calm, cool and collected.
I hope it works out for you.

Why don't you try to get him alone with you and then talk to him
ask him what kind of movies do he like and what is his favorite food and would he like to go out with you some time.

the next time you start to back-up, start up the talking and explain to him that you're nervous. If you're already friends, then it shouldn't be that awkward!

talk to the guy...
let him know about your problems.
and if he's a decent bloke, he'll help you out.
and if he likes you too, even if he isn't a decent bloke he's still likely to help you out.
BTW you'll want somebody who is a decent bloke or better.
