I think within two years we will have one. Most people I know are going to disagree and bash the heavyweight division but I do believe there are 3-4 solid heavyweights just waiting to get the opportunity to prove themselves. Already fighting some good competition is Vladimir Klitchko. Everyone wrote him off when he lost to Lamon Brewster but everyone is entitled to a bad night or two and he initially reported that something was wrong with him but was accused of being a bad sport so he dropped it. Since that loss he has beaten an undefeated rising heavyweight prospect who everyone thought was the next big thing (Sam Peter). He has dominated the current longest reigning heavyweight champion and took his belt (Chris Byrd) and has done everything but unify which he is looking to do. I expect a fight between him and Rahman early next year as both men have been stepping it up. Also I think James Toney will play a part before its over as he has been trying his best in the fight for supremecy beating John Ruiz (then having it taken from him) and taking a fight against Rahman and now attempting a fight with Sam Peter. Is that a resume or what he has been fighting nothing but the elite since his step up in weight. Evander Hollyfield, John Ruiz, Hassim Rahman ---all former heavyweight champions.
Are we a bit away from unification? Yes but everyone is eager to fight each other and I think it is exciting to see who will rise up. But whoever it is, I believe has to go through Rahman and Klitchko before they will be considered the true champion.

You are talking about the undisputed heavy weight title, that's when a boxer holds all the major titles together at the same time we haven t had that since Lennox lewis, right now the heavyweight titles are shared between different fighters and none of them seems willing to go ahead and unify the title. Wladimir klischko holds two major titles the IBF and the WBO heavyweight titles as well the insignificant IBO title Ruslan Chagaev Holds the WBA title Samuel Peter Holds the WBC heavyweight title. Right now Klischko holds two of the major titles, if he fights and beats Peter (neither one of them seems ready to make this fight happen) and wins the WBC title he would be recognized as the undisputed heavy weight champion however keep in mind that Ali's time, there were only two major sanctioning bodies and in Tyson's time there were only three major bodies, right now we have four and thus a legitimate champ would have to hold all four titles at once.

Babe, with all these boxing questions you must have cauliflower ears. Roy Jones, now 37, was one of the best boxers to ever lace up a pair of gloves. He recently beat Prince Babi Ajuamu in Boise, Idaho. Boise bleeping Idaho. Now, I like Boise. The skiing and fishing are both good, but it is not Vegas. Why does Roy Jones continue to fight(the money of course, the same reason Ali fought beyond his prime and came down with Parkinson's disease) when he should hang up his gloves and retire. Surely by now(may I call you Shirley?) he has earned enough to walk away from the sport. Linear heavyweight champion? Won't happen for awhile. Too much money and rancor. Don't hold your breath.

Boxing is all about money now and since there are many boxing organizations, it may never happen. The only way is to have a "all championship series " for the undesputed championship elimination series amongst all the governing bodies and the winner to be the CHAMPION.

There's no such thing as a linear champion. The idea is based on the notion of 'the man who beat the man', which would work if each champ beat the champ before him. But two fighters retired undefeated as heavyweight champ: Gene Tunney and Rocky Marciano. So, logically, it's always been the consensus champ who's been recognised since Tunney. There is no consensus champ right now-they're all bums.
