I only got to use an electric pump twice, at the hospital. It was Medela brand, and it worked great! Looked into buying one myself, but it was too expensive to justify, since I really only needed it to make bottles for when we went out somewhere or he went to the babysitter's.
I did get their hand pump kit, and it was also great, but tireing. Once, I tried the Avent brand hand-pump, and I couldn't get it to work at all. About 15 minutes worth of effort for not even a single drop. Hand expressing worked better.
If you will need to pump because you're going back to work, I would definately say go for the electric.
One thing though, is that I also tried a battery powered one, Evenflo brand, and it sucked. Never was able to pump enough to make even one bottle. And I had to turn it up way high to get anything, and it hurt. Total waste of money.

theres not much difference, they both do same thing, from personal experience, hand help pumps, wich can be battery opertaed aswell, makles life a lil easier cos you can still get and do things like vaccuuming or something, where as the big electrical ones you have to sit in one place, and electrical ones tend to hurt abit.

Advent is the best! I got more milk with that little hand held than any electric I tried and those always felt like they were ripping my nipple off.

the electric ones are much easier but a lot more expensive. I was able to rent one from a local maternity store.

Electric. It can keep up a steady suction and your hand doesn't get tired.
