For the same reason that kings used to align themselves with the church and say that they were appointed by God to rule a nation of people. Which eventually lead to the creation of a new religion so someone could get divorced.
For the same reason that people dress up extra nice on certain holidays.
And for anyone reading this, do you think that only one of the 12 failed? How well do you know your Bible? One denied thrice, didn't he? There was also a second person watching the proceedings that was not named, but that was recognized by disciples. everyone stated Judas Iscariot's name.
Some people are mislead, some askew and misread, others think that is all they have to do. Some use it for gains of one type or another. And I wouldn't believe that "falling short" is limited to just in this fashion. When you try to reach a figure, think of those that have to wear things to prove something. Could that be idolatry? There are so many things that has to be considered.

Because it's easier to live your 'beleifs' when people are watching - on Sundays - than when they're not. Besides church is the Christian thing to do. Sit in a pew for an hour or two per week and presto! instant ticket to heaven.
Of course it doesn't really work that way - that's just the cop-out way of being lazy. I wish more so-called Christians would realize they're being watched more the rest of the week than on Sunday.

Misconception, guilt and the lack of a right mind.
There are many people who misread and misconstrue religious texts and they mould their own personalised ideas of what "God" whats them to be. They think that being a Sunday christian will weigh even to the wrong they have done all week. They use going to church on Sundays to cleanse themselves of all sins and start the week guilt-free. Then, there are some others who just do not get it!

The honest truth is that all people are "crooks" during the week irrespective of whether they are Christian or not. No human is capable of living up to everything in the Bible, and even Christians themselves will acknowledge that even they "sin". A fundamental misconception is that Christians only get to heaven through good deeds - the Bible does state that its through grace that one is saved i.e. its God's love which gets you to heaven, and not through any works of mankind (e.g. good deeds, regular attendance at church).

They are the ones that SHOULD be there. Maybe in time the teachings will sink in. Then there is also the fact that church is a good place for politicking, if they hold office or are wanting to run for office. Maybe it's an ultimatum with their wife or parents. Who knows? Maybe they want to socialize. There are many reasons why people go to church.

It is called hypocracy. I upset a friend of mine who was also a Christian when he told me I should wear a cross so people would know I was a Christian.
I told him people only need to wear a cross to let people know they are Christian when they don't follow what Christ taught.
If people spent more time living a Christian (Or Whatever thier religion was) lifestyle then the world would be a better place.

Declaring oneself to be a christian, doesnt mean a person will became a true Christian.
Faith without act is useless. It is not a lip service.
The only true christian is the one who follow the will and teaching of Christ and not of men.

What do you mean by "so many"???
One out of 50? One out of 100?
How about one out of 12. Is that more, or less?
One out of 12. Get it? Judas?
Get it yet?
If we focus on the failure of Judas and ignore what the rest of the 12 did, then Christianity would have failed from the get-go.
