That happened to me once...I mean, I saw a child in a car in a parking lot. The child was asleep, the windows rolled up. It was summer. I had nothing on me to break the window, and since I've never had to break a car window, I didn't know how long it would take. So I went into the store and told them, they brought a policeman out with them. The mom returned by then, and I left them all to deal with the issue.

The thing is, what if you don't have something to break the window with? You have to ask yourself, is it more time-effective to stay here trying to rescue the baby, or would it be more time-effective to run into the store and contact a store person and the police? Or, if I discern it'd be better, I'd use my cell and call the police.

I love animals, but I have to say, I put a higher priority on human life than on animal life. I would definitely report a dog in a locked up car on a hot summer day. I don't think I'd break a window for a dog...but as I said, I probably wouldn't break a window anyway, realistically speaking.

I locked myself out of my own house, once. I tried to break the window to get in. VERY hard thing to do. So, I know a car window would be even tougher. It's not a matter of heroics, but a matter of the wisest use of time.

I would absolutely smash the window if the animal was in distress or if a child was left alone in a hot car. I believe that I have a "true heart" - loving, compassionate, humanitarian, but I can't help but be curious - how do you figure dogs and babies are the same? I know they are both innocent beings. Other than that - ?

That's a difficult call, since babies and dogs usually last less than twenty minutes in a hot car in the kind of heat we've been having.

At the bottom of this website (http://www.11alive.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=82870) is a list of car temperatures inside the car versus outside the car in 83.7°F weather.

Lately our temperatures have been in the high 90's, so the figures in reality would be extremely different, toward the more detrimental end.

If you loved dogs or babies, you would have to consider breaking the car window while you waited for the cops to arrive.

Yes, I would. I may have to pay for a new window,...but not before the heartless person who left a dog or baby in the car in the first place is in jail for abuse.

For a dog I would call the police, For a baby I would smash the window.

Yes I would. Then when the owner of the car came out, guess what else I would do!

I would call the police, park the car in and wait for them to do it, so I'm not liable for damages.
