The simple answer is because they would not give up their sinful ways and follow the Comandments of God.
Genesis 19 Lot tried to save Sodom and Gomorah by makng a deal with Angels sent by God. If Lot could find two good men in the city the lord would spare the cities. but he could not and the Angels told himto Flee the city with his famiy and not to look back at the destruction.

Sodom, however, persisted in a course in defiance of Jehovah, becoming known for such immoral practices as homosexuality. “The cry of complaint about Sodom and Gomorrah,” Jehovah declared, “yes, it is loud, and their sin, yes, it is very heavy.” God therefore sent his angels to destroy Sodom, with the assurance to Abraham that if ten righteous persons could be found in the place, the whole city would be spared. Ge 18:16, 20-33.

Why were those cities and their inhabitants destroyed? The apostle Peter mentions indulgence in “loose conduct.” (2 Peter 2:7) As indicated by the use of the Greek term from which that expression is translated, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah indulged in wrongdoing in a manner that displayed brazen disrespect, even contempt, for law and authority. Jude 7 says that they ‘committed fornication excessively and went out after flesh for unnatural use.’ The grossness of their conduct was manifest when the men of Sodom, “from boy to old man, all the people in one mob,” surrounded the house of Lot and demanded that he turn over his guests for the men of Sodom to gratify their perverted appetites. And they shouted denunciations at Lot because he resisted their depraved demands.

Because the people of Sodom and Gomorrah did not trust the angels the Lord sent, and instead wanted to harass them, whereas Lot extended hospitality - even to the point of trying to placate the mob with the virginity of his daughters. This proved to the angels - G*d's messengers - that the town was beyond redemption.

Good question...Genesis 18 is the why, with Abraham's pleading with God to save the city. Genesis 19 contains the how, and goes a long way to further why God destroyed the city.

I always prefer that God do his own talking! 8-)

The real question here should be, "If God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with hail and fire, what should we expect our judgment as a nation to be?...."

As far as the answer to the question....one of many reasons was their perversion.

To give Christians a story with which to persecute sinners, particularly homosexuals, and then the alleged means justify their actions.

The cities were full of prostition and gambling and ultimatly full of sin. They refused God, refused His angels who tried to help them, so He detroyed them as punishment and to start over again.
