In your opinion, what makes someone fluent in their 2nd..3rd....etc. language? Think about when you would consider someone fluent speaking English as well as if you were studying a foreign language.

i consider someone fluent in their 2nd or 3rd language when they know enough to get around. i came to italy 4 years ago, didnt even know "ciao" meant hello and goodbye. didnt even know 'florence' was called 'firenze' in italian...thats how little i even knew the language. imagine me getting around at that time...zero. its been a long time now and simply living here, listening to people, watching tv a LOT and going to the university where im the only american, ive been forced to learn it on my own. and NOW that i speak it fast and quick and understand about 98% of what people say, i think thats would be considered 'fluent'.

just put it this way, when you can pop out a foriegn language joke, speak their slang, their dialect, enough to ask and respond to any answers in or out of the house in public or in private, THATS being fluent.

the disadvantages for me have been, im beginning to speak even more the florentine dialect, the trick is i cant tell when i do and i dont. like the other day i was in a different town 2 hrs from florence trying out some new clothes with my bf, and i said quickly 'what do you think?' in italian. he was with this other guy who has helping us, they both laughed, i said, 'what?'. he replied, 'nothing, you speak the real REAL fiorentino'. i cant tell. but its fluent enough!

You're under no circumstances too historic to be taught a language. You would now not be *as* fluent as anyone who found out at an overly younger age, however you'll be able to nonetheless be very trained and just about fluent. I suppose it is super that you just desire to be taught one more language and desire you achieve this. *I found out a language in my 20s and received to the factor in which I was once dreaming and pondering in mentioned language.I misplaced so much of it due to the fact I did not use it, however I'm certain I would get it again if I attempted. So, it is viable.

When you start dreaming in that language. Let's say you are japanese learning English. Your language in your dream will always be in Japanese. Everyone (Eng-Speaking background) will all speak Japanese. When you are fluent in English, the people in your dream will start speaking in English. Hope you understand this. Also you will notice people will stop correcting you and stop asking you to repeat what ever you say.
