He says that he is on medication and that he's fine, but we don't know him very well.

Many people with mental illness can function quite normally, with careful treatment. As long as he takes his meds, sees his drs regularly, and watches out for himself for symptoms, you should be in absolutely NO DANGER! Most schizo's I've known only get messed up because they don't take care of themselves. I have bipolar disorder, and when I get really bad depressed I become psychotic. As a result, before my treatment was stabilized I was a f'ed up mess, hospitalized over and over again. I was in with the schizo's, addicts and other sick people, and the one thing we all had in common was that our treatments weren't working. Once a person gets the meds and psych therapy right, we can be pretty much normal for the rest of our lives.
There are also wide variances in severity of illness. Some schizophrenics are classic--certain that someone (or everyone) is out to get them, hearing voices in their heads, extreme depression and suicidality. Others may occasionally hear a little voice, or get a little paranoid, but they also are aware that they are not feeling right and can generally live around it.

However, I seriously doubt your new roomie is going to start ranting about aliens invading his anus, while standing naked on the coffee table with a gun to your cat's head...

Schizophrenics are generally not violent when they are not on their meds but here are some things to watch out for. If he talks to himself, if he keeps to himself alot, if he won't eat sumthing that everyone else will when you cook or he keeps all of his food seperate. My step-daughter is schizo but refuses to take her meds. She talks to people that aren't there and all of the above. When she is on her meds these are some of the side effects that will clue you in to the fact that he is medicating..eyes rolling in his head, GOOD appetite or VERY poor appetite. Headaches, sleeping alot. Those are all good signs. Don't be afraid to ask him to show you what meds he's on then call the pharmacist and ask about side effects. If they're present even minutely u r safe. ;)

YES!!! I suggest you MOVE OUT or get him out. Schizophrenics usually stop taking their medication within 3 months (95% or more). It's VERY dangerous for you. Get out of there NOW.
