is the 2002 grand am a safe care. Does it have a safety cage around the body of the car

The car does indeed have a "safety cage" in the body, but it is not a RACE CAR cage. It has reinforcement inside the doors and the superstructure is built to absorb a lot of energy.
Is it safe in a collision? Depends what you collide with. If you go up against a Peterbuilt, you're going to lose!! But they are, by-and-large about as safe as most anything else in its class on the road.
