will be walking within the year and other than keeping him away from the hole, and keeping it securely covered, does anyone have any ideas on how one would make it more safe in case of an emergency, for example: if someone was working on the well, the lid was off, and by some awful chance my son fell in, any ideas on what could be used to get him out if he wasn't old enough to know to hold onto a rope? i know this is a morbid question, and we always keep it covered, but i've heard of it happening before, and the hole is small enough that if someone jumped in after him, you'd land on top of him and hurt him worse. i can't find any safety devices on-line. i'm just trying basically to "baby proof" it like you do outlets in your house. avoiding all possible avoidable catastrophes. thanks for your input!

Make it look like a wishing well. You know, a cute brick wall and a roofed crank with a bucket... But no bucket. Instead, use good nylon rope attached to a screen-lift. This is an aluminum or stainless steel box, open at the top with stainless steel or fiberglass screening material on the sides and bottom.

When you crank up the box, anything - cats, dogs, snakes, thermos, possums, or babies, will be brought up, and the bottom of the well will not collect a bunch of junk.

;-D Not meaning the baby is junk, but you know what I mean!
PS. I should get a share of any coins you bring up!

I'd do 2 things. 1st I'd build a fence with a lockable gate around it. 2nd I'd get one of those toddler life jackets that also hook under their bottom as well. Make sure its the kind that has a loop at the top of the jacket. Then get a strong wodden or metal pole that is as deep as the well and has a large strong hook on the end (rounded corners preferably so you won't poke holes into your child). If someone has to have the lid off make the child wear the jacket. Even if he's inside! If he get's out and accidentally falls in your still safe. That way if there's water you make sure they definately won't drown and since it has the loop on the top you can use a light to catch the loop with your pole and pull him up (granted you may need several people for this.

Think about this 3 things in my mind. 1st secure well with 1.8meter fence provided with locking device. 2nd provide welded grille cover on the well mouth. 3rd provide painted steel ladder 12 inches in width x 28 feet long inside the well jus in case the 1st & 2nd solutiondinnt work there is always acces to the bottom of the well.

The cheapest solution : do the following by yourself
1-Material required: Steel bars (as used in reinforced concrete ) diameter 3/8 inch
2- Prepare 2 rings or 2 square shape frames ,first one with dimension =1.5 meter and second with dimension=2.0 meters (diameter)
3-Connect the 2 frames by straight bars 30-40 inches(75-100 cm) length ,spacing=about 8 inches(20 cm) @ large frame
4-Fixation by welding ,special clamps or tie wires as used in re-bars of reinforced concrete
5- Now you have a movable safety cage light weight and effective ,paint it with anti- rust paint !!!
I hope safe life for you and children

i am not an expert, but i would have built a fence around it with a gate that you can keep locked. i am not sure of the feasibility part.
