I'm planning a trip to Toronto and I heard from friends that they weren't able to get into Montreal without their passport.

Not until end of 2007 ... as it stand now anyway.
Actulaly you wont need a passport to get in to Canada, but one to getback in to the U.S. ... although Canada may make a similar requirement by then.

Right now you need a your birth certificate and some kind of official government Photo ID, like a drivers license. (SS cards are not acceptable as ID). You may or may not need these to get into Canada, but have them with you in case. And you will definitely need them to get back into the U.S.!

No not yet.

US is pushing for tighter restrictions faster than we Canadians are.

I still think it's unfair that we have to pay $80+ for passports every 5 years just to prove AGAIN that we are Canadians. People can still hock passports and copy them.

It's going to keep being something different. It's passports now, but what is it next? Cards with our fingerprints? Implants?

Crazy people, where is the love?!

By 2007 you will need a passport to get back into the United States. As far as I know even by then I don't think that Canada has finalized any such legislation that requires US citizens to have one to enter here.
