why would you die for nothing? silly question. if someone had a gun to my head and demanded i tell them i was christian, i would have to refuse. not for any reason other than i don't want to make their religion a joke. and i don't believe in lying.

Atheists are only categorized for not believing in a God(s). That does not mean that they are not able to believe in other things, like love, family, friends, etc. I don't consider myself an atheist, but my views on God are pretty much restricted to what i consider logical in my head, i consider myself a man of science, but i still believe that there are higher forces out there beyond our understandings that are only able to be understood through faith. At the same time i believe in the love of my family and friends, the work that i do and the satisfaction it brings me through completion. These things i wouldn't say i would die for but they are strong enough that i would fight for them. And i'm sorry, but not all believers in God would die for him or their beliefs for him. Everyone's faith is limited to some point, and even though there are SOME that would die for him, others, like myself think life is too precious to lose it to something that in the end is only based on faith.

Emily,

Before you try to prove something, consider what you are asking, or more importantly, what you are not asking.

What do atheists believe in?

I would say that the majority of atheists who are citizens of the USA believe in the Constitution. Are they willing to go to war for this belief? Many do. Are they willing to die for this belief? Many have.

Do you believe that these people are any less honorable or deserving of respect than religious people who have died for their country?

I wouldn't...what good would that do? I would just be gone. I wouldn't waste this one life that I have just because others don't agree with me. The bottom line is that I can't force myself to believe in anything supernatural...I can pretend, but why die for it. If I die, no one that is set in their ways is going to change their mind anyway.

There's no universal answer for this question among atheists, because we don't necessarily believe in anything. We just don't believe in a god. I, personally, wouldn't DIE to get my point across.

The question applies to everyone, not just atheists. Some people will die for their beliefs, some won't. Atheism is not a belief, it's a disbelief.

It depends. Would I die for my girlfriend? I believe in her and I would die for her. Would I die for my family? I believe in them and I would die for them. I'm assuming you are referring to an atheists beliefs regarding the existence of a god. Here, I have nothing to die for because I don't believe in a god. I don't believe that a god doesn't exist, and I don't believe that a god does exist, I simply lack the belief in a god. So there's nothing for me to die for. I would, however, die for a person's right to believe in a whatever they want to believe in.

Considering that the only thing that label athiest means is that they don't beleive in deities. Who in their right mind would die for something that doesn't exist?

Athiest beleive in an assortment of other things that they probably feel are worth dying for.

I'm an Atheist and I would LIVE for what I believe in. That way, I can keep fighting for it.
