No, literacy is NOT dead! Not in ALL of us anyway ...
Those idiots who annoy you (and ME!) so much are semiliterate - they are barely capable of reading and writing, so their spelling is a right old pig's ear!
When my daughter spells like that I explain the difference - but these people obviously either had NO help and advice, or they were too thick to understand it..!
The schools don't help much, although some of them TRY ... the ones in America are too busy worrying about weapons to teach properly, and the ones in Britain are too busy trying to save money..! Why have another teacher when you can get a manager for twice the wage who'll tell you that you can't AFFORD a teacher...!???

Literacy is not yet dead, but badly crippled by rampaging gangs of in-discriminant spellcheckers. No one is taught grammatical structure anymore. Who needs to learn the correct way to spell when all you do is push a button and all your mistakes vanish, if you even bother.

Come on. they say the know English. Think about it: What about if you are the one thatis wrong.. and they are right? so.. live as the crazy one you are for thinking that there is a difference between loose and lose. Based on most people answering.. that is usless knowledge... SADLY :(

I agree with you, and I am surprised when I see "loose" used this way.
But, you know, I looked at "dictionary.com" and it supports this use of the word. This may be a source for people who use the word in such a way.
Or, as you suggested, literacy may be dying off.
Anyway, thanks for bringing it up. :)

Yes, literacy is dead. Schools don't put emphasis on spelling anymore.....neither does yahoo answers! But they are kind of fun to decipher!

So what if people can't spell! It's not as if they're writing to the Queen or something now is it? As long as you can understand what people mean, who cares?? And remember, for a lot of people who use YA, English isn't their native language, but at least they try. For goodness sake just take a chill pill & relax!
