Last week my cousin ran into the pharmacy to get her perscription and left her infant in a unlocked car with the air conditioning running. The police gave her a ticket for child neglect. She seemed shocked and at the time didn't understand why she was in so much trouble. She is very aware now that she was wrong. We are also well aware that she made a very very bad decision, so please dont respond if you want to just bash her. She has no defense and I am not making excuses for her. I am looking for information on what will happen now, or what the punishment is for this charge. Will she need a lawyer? Does anyone know how this will work?
As for now we are looking for a parenting class in hopes that she will not make other serious mistakes. If you have any info on parenting and parenting safety classes in Montgomery County MD, we would appreciate that as well.

Has anyone experienced a situation like this one or do you know someone with a similiar experience? If so, please tell me about it.

She should contact a lawyer to see what the likely consequences are for such an offense, and get some advice on a course action to mitigate these consequences. The parenting course sounds good, and she can likely find them through either a local community college, church group, or Montgomery County's Infant and Toddlers program.

She may be able to get free legal advice on this issue from the folks at Infant and Toddlers, but she will need to take action, because a lot of things could happen in terms of jail time, fines, or even loss of custody. If she shows contrition in her words and deeds, she will liekly get off with PBJ (probation before judgement) and court costs, or community service and a fine.

I am in MN and generally around here what ends up happening is a home visit from the county by a social worker to examine the living conditions and to better understand the family structure that the child is being raised in. As far as the legal stand point of needing a lawyer, call the county court house and ask to speak with the clerk of court. They will be able to answer any questions. But have her call. They are usually very picky about who they talk to. Good luck!

She will definitely need a lawyer, and hire a therapist immediately and a lot of friends to back her up.
It doesn't matter that the air was running, she left a child alone in a vehicle, someone could have snatched the child and murdered her/him within hours.

I am sure if you enter "child neglect cases" into a yahoo search you will find all you need.

Well first off no one should leave their child in a running Vechile in the first place what would she have done if that child could and would have crawled out of the car seat and set that car in drive now maybe next time she will think before leaving her child unattended in a running vechile.I have no sympathy for moronic people like that and what she gets for punishment she well deserves it...

I am sure that the child protective services will be knocking on her door. All she has to do is stay calm. And show that she is a good mom which I am sure that she is. She needs to tell them that it was a stupid mistake and that she wouldn't do it again. But she has to be an adult about.
