Last week my cousin ran into the pharmacy to get her perscription and left her infant in a unlocked car with the air conditioning running. The police gave her a ticket for child neglect. She seemed shocked and at the time didn't understand why she was in so much trouble. She is very aware now that she was wrong. We are also well aware that she made a very very bad decision, so please dont respond if you want to just bash her. She has no defense and I am not making excuses for her. I am looking for information on what will happen now, or what the punishment is for this charge. Will she need a lawyer? Does anyone know how this will work?
As for now we are looking for a parenting class in hopes that she will not make other serious mistakes. If you have any info on parenting and parenting safety classes in Montgomery County MD, we would appreciate that as well.

I don't have any information for you, but wanted to say that I'm glad your cousin realized her mistake. She is only human, and although it's a terrible mistake, it doesn't make her a horrible Mom. She's very lucky, and I'm sure VERY thankful that nothing happened to her baby. I think she should get a lawyer, or at least consult with one, just in case. I hope things work out for her.

I am in MN and generally around here what ends up happening is a home visit from the county by a social worker to examine the living conditions and to better understand the family structure that the child is being raised in. As far as the legal stand point of needing a lawyer, call the county court house and ask to speak with the clerk of court. They will be able to answer any questions. But have her call. They are usually very picky about who they talk to. Good luck!

Like any other ticket... You read it and follow the directions. Telephone the number by the deadline date. Inform them of your ticket number. They inform you of the amount you need to pay. Then you pay the fine by the deadline date and you're done with the legal stuff.
As for Parenting:
Cardinal Rule #1 Never never leave your baby alone! To many things can happen so very quickly. Baby is in danger if this rule is broken.
Infants are the easy ones to take care of, they just lay there. Before her baby begins moving around on its own she needs to know to keep her eyes on that baby at all times. Babies are FAST! They can and do get into everything even when are right there watching.

Well, at least she was smart enough to leave the air conditioning on. There have been children that have died in the heat because a parent would rather leave them in a hot car than to take them in the store with them. She can get a free consult with an attorney and see what she has to do....at least most attornies offer a free consult.
