I don't believe much of what I see on TV and hear that some people think was somehow miraculous. I think that if there is a purpose for speaking in tongues, it could happen, but the real question I think is what does that really mean? I hear about people just speaking gibberish and I don't believe that is from God. What would the purpose be? If we need to be impressed, all any of us has to do is go outside and look around at the beauty of the world that has been created for us.

I believe and speak in a prayer language, and have been present while someone spoke in tongues and someone interpreted. The gifts of the spirit are so misunderstood that it is hard to answer in such a short forum.
I don't believe that you have to have an unknown tongue to be saved as some believe. There are too many who die shortly after being saved that didn't. Like the thief on the cross.
What I do know is that the gifts are for us to give. What i mean by that is they help us minister to others. Not for our use only. What good is the gift of healing, if you don't heal people. Or the gift of the word of knowledge if you don't share with someone God's precious word.
If you would like to talk to me more feel free to click on my name. be blessed in Jesus.
also, don't forget that when we get saved we take Jesus into our hearts. Jesus is the Word, so we have the whole of the Word in our spirit. The prayer language is pure word. A love language that knows exactly what to pray.

Well, the Bible says that different people get different gifts from God. Some have the gift of speaking in tongues, others the ability to translate what was just said, and others are given gift in charity giving.
Just because you don't have that certain gift doesn't mean God didn't give you something special. You may have to search deep for it, but if you look hard enough, you'll find that special talent God gave you, and you should share it with the world (for good that is, not to do evil with :p).

I believe in speaking in tongues but it is 1 gift among many and not something every Christian gets. I believe that 1 Cor 14 is very clear on what is acceptable in a house of worship and disorderly things like jumping and yelling and running and dancing in the aisles are not acceptable in Church, if you feel the need to do such things, do it alone at home and then it wont be a show for others. Slaying in the Spirit... not Biblical. joyful music and hand raising is fine as long as you arent doing it to draw attention to yourself.

No one who has ever spoke in tongues for real regrets it!!! Tongues is one the most powerful weapons a Christian can have with his faith. Tongues will help you intercede for you loved ones. Tongues can demolish hurt and pain in your life. The devil hates tongues and works hard to try to bring confusion about it, because he knows how powerful it is. I have been praying in tongues for years and you want to see powerful results in the life of people you are praying for and yourself, then pray in tongues. There are different functions of it and levels but it is all for the edifying and building you up. There were needs I have in my life and I began to pray in tongues and some of the prayers were answered immediately just as soon as I walked out of the door. It's awesome.

if you're not sure, you're saying you don't trust God. Jesus Himself tells us in the Book of Acts (ch.1) that speaking in tongues is a gift from God. You can't fake it. I've seen people try, but it doesn't work.
I say, Get filled with the Holy Spirit, it can only do you good!

Even though I'm a former christian, I hope you'll still listen to my opinion. Speaking in tongues freaks me out and it was one of the things I disliked about church.

Christians..are not allowed to give opinions...as this would be the definition of testifying of ones self
John 5:31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
So according to the word speaking in tongues is of God by his spirit..
Read 1 Corinthians 12 chapter speaking in tongues is 1 of the gifts of the spirit verse 10:...to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
Speaking in tongues was given as a sign of the spirit of God the Holy Ghost entering the believer...There is a difference between speaking in tongues when receiving the Holy Ghost and having the gift in operation of speaking in tongues...Now there is an order that was given about speaking in tongues ..and since you've said you have been around this "stuff" then you are aware of different times when you hear people speaking
1.You are allowed to speak in tongues in church without an interpreter when...There is a time of high praise when the bible says...1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
But when the time of high praise comes to an end then..it is REQUIRED for that one to have an interpreter verses:
27-28.. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28. But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Above all things wisdom must be used and those there must be led of the spirit because Paul also concluded this
verses 39-40...Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40. Let all things be done decently and in order.
This is to say...You have to know the order that God requires and that is why he put pastors to oversee..If the pastor has this time of high praise ..it is allowable for one to speak whether they are heard or not ...but it is when that time ends and one has the floor...like someone who gives announcements..or the pastor to give remarks or someone who is there to greet ...whatsoever it is when that time finishes..it is then..that if a person where to continue in speaking in tongues ..it is required for an interpreter...God bless
