Thank You for asking !
Since there seems to be some confusion about "totally American cars", I'd like to explain:
Many auto manufacturers are GLOBAL companies.
Ford, for example, builds & sells vehicles all over the world.
if you go to http://www.ford.com
And then click on 'global sites' You will see the many, many countries where Ford products are available.
Manufacturing everything here in America & then shipping vehicles all over the world just wouldn't make sense.
You can tell which country
The final assembly plants of every vehicle are located in by the 1st character of the VIN#
1=USA
2=Canada
3=Mexico
J=Japan
K=Korea....etc
I, having been in the automotive business since 1983, have sold thousands of vehicles, new & used, foreign & domestic.
I also study & read everything I can get my hands on regarding my industry.
Much of "perception" of quality in Japanese Auto Manufacturers is fading, & more & more people ARE taking a second look at the Big Three, as you suggest.
If it weren't for Henry Ford, the Father of ALL auto manufacturing,
there wouldn't be any of the others!
If you would like more iinsight about an auto company, please take a look at http://www.fordboldmoves.com
No other automobile company has a site like this, and Ford Is setting themselves above the rest, with this kind of website.
Thanks again for asking!
(btw people are still looking at, test driving & buying at my dealership. We are located in an Auto Mall with 12 other dealerships, foreign & domestic, & the Ford store is the busiest of them all!)

I only consider purchasing domestic cars from Ford, Chrysler or General Motors. No rice rockets or kim che cruisers in my driveway. The only garbage car I ever had was Japanese engined. The engine blew the head gasket at just a little over 60,000 miles.

Most "American" cars are built in Canada and Mexico.
While many "Japanese" cars are built in the US.
The Japanese employ over 100,000 Americans, so buying Japanese helps America. And you get a reliable car too boot.
I am not anti-American cars..... I would definately consider Corvette, Escalade, Mustang, PT Cruiser as my next car. But I am definately worrisome about their reliability.
