Seriously!!!
I'm the exact same way and was truly shocked when I over heard people talking about how I had a huge attitude and thought I was better than everyone!!
Now I make a point to say good morning to everyone in my office. Even the people I don't generally work with. I bring food at least once a week. Sweets and cake, bagels and fruit baskets. Especially if I'm there on a weekend, I leave something for everyone to find Monday morning.
Remember details about folks. Their kids. Everyone likes to talk about their kids. Pets too. Sickness is something everyone seems to like to talk about. The weather is an acceptable topic if silence drags a little too long. Sports is too if you can stand the topic, which I can't.
Good luck.

Just smile more. The nice thing about smiling more...is that other people will start talking to you. This will help with being shy (even if it makes you nervous at first).
If you are shy... smile and say "hi" to people. That's it! Others will know that you are friendly. If they want to talk to you, they can begin from there.
Side question** are you from seattle? If you are and wanna chat send me an email!

Often, shy people are mistunderstood as stuck up. The best thing to do is get involved in conversations wherein you ask questions and seem interested in others. Become a little lively. we will like you!!!!! c'mon its not fun hanging out and having nothing to say. there is another breed of "shy" person out there, and its the passive attention whore type. by being quiet and meek there is control. It gets that person attention and concern. Those types bug the crap out of me! I intentionaly ignore them and have a whooping good time in front of them as if they did not exist. make sure you arent one of those types.

I was the same way, quiet, shy with people I don't know, and some have mistaken me for conceited. But once they got to know me, they found that was not the case. If you don't want people to misunderstand you, you've got to come out of your shell for at least the first impression.

really who cares what they think? i've always been quiet around people i'm not close to....if they ask me about it, i just say "hey, what do you want me to say?" I mean, why do some people talk just to hear their own voice?? They really don't have nothing to say, ya know? But people who know me well know that I talk a lot and that i am so NOT stuck up.
