Is the rank of "commodore" presently being used in the U S Navy and if not, under what conditions was it used?

Commodore is no longer used as a rank, it was the "one star" admiral rank and has been replaced by Vice Admiral (lower half). Commodores were usually the commanders of a small group (squadron) of ships. It still lives on as an informal title for a senior captain who commands a squadron.

Commodore is only used during a time of declared war (something we have not had since WWII). It is a rank above a Capt, but below a Rear Admiral in the Navy. They usually commanded a group of ships rather than just one like most Capt's.

Commadores now are referred to as Senior Captains

Commodore is not a rank.
It is a Title that comes with command of a fleet.
Captain is both a rank, and a title. A Commander can be the Captain of a navy vessel if it is his command. Even a Lt. can be a Captain of a torpedo boat, etc.

Charles D's answer is short, sweet and almost correct. It was used as a wartime rank for a 1 star admiral but no longer. However, it is now call, Rear Admiral, Lower Half....not Vice Admiral.
A Rear Admiral, Upper Half is a 2 star rank while a Vice Admiral is a 3 star.

It was once used, but as times changed, some officers felt commodore was similar to "commode", it seemed derogatory and so they changed the title to Rear Admiral Lower Half. There is talk about bringing it back though.

Well maxma if your not an Admiral yourself you dont call them rear admiral lower half, you call them admiral, well actually to normal enlisted you probably just dont speak at all. Unless your an E7 or above.
Also the Coast Guard Auxiliary uses the word Commodore as a rank, but they dont get paid. . . .. yeah.

Commodore is not presently being used. It has been used in wartime, but I don't know what circumstances must exist, if any.
