The War of 1812 is one of the forgotten wars of the United States. The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended much like it started; in stalemate; it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. The offensive actions of the United States failed in every attempt to capture Canada. The British were stopped at a couple of places, but they were more interested in Europe that the USA. (and who can blame them !!)

As a slight diversion - the Americans are trying to make up for being later for the last two world war by being really early for the next one !!!!

Great Britain made the fatal mistake of engaging in two wars at once. They basically overextended their military forces to the point that they could not afford to keep fighting us. So in a very real sense, their struggles in Europe won the War of 1812 for the United States. It could be argued that we didn't actually win that war, but that we and the Crown simply agreed to stop fighting. Whether or not that's accurate, the Battle of New Orleans was spectacular. Andrew Jackson and the American forces sorta rubbed the Brits' noses in it...

The war between the USA and Britain caused by British interference with US shipping trade as part of Britain's economic warfare against Napoleonic France. A treaty signed in Ghent, Belgium, in December 1814 ended the conflict, with neither side victorious. it had nothing to do with us trying to retake the united states we were just trying to stop the treacherous French and Napoleon from widening his empire. so we pissed the USA off a bit by charging taxes etc. on US shipping going to France which started a war between us but nothing on the scale that was going on in Europe had we sent Nelson and wellington over there we probably would have kicked your butts at that point in history if we had not of been fighting a war in Europe

The War of 1812 was England's bid to reclaim the USA as a territory of Britain. it was fought here in the USA and if you can't tell, they lost, we won.

Ah, I remember that quote from my history textbook!! "The American Pageant", is it? =p

It's pretty much as the other people said: The British were so tied up in Europe that the Americans had an easier-than-expected victory.

all i know is britain won. outnumbered 5500 men
to 7000 is not easy. however, they managed to humiliate them easily, and scare them away in just 2 years.they said britain would lose canada in 2 weeks. there loyalty is still to us though. britain won.
