You have to be 18 to drop out, and yes that would be stupid because unless you are a super-senior (more than one round through the 12th grade) than you are almost out and should wait until graduation. Or the other option is a proficiency exam. It is a test that most states have and it allows you to prove that you are proficient in your education through a 12th grade level and then you may leave high school and in CA when I took it I was only 16. And yes I passed. The proficiency exam is not a GED and is not valid in any other state than the one which issued it to you unless the other states laws allow it's use. Kind of a grey area really. I took it and passed and if you are looking for a way to move on and up in life it's a great one. I was able to start at our community college at 16 out of high school. So good luck and think smart.

16 years old is generally the age that you can be considered legal to become your own person (certified as an adult).
The problem is that with a GED you dont really have much of chance of getting very far in life. Unless youre quitting to go to college...but somehow I dont think that this is the case.
Without a diploma you will find a difficult road ahead of you. Blue collar jobs with poor wages unless you can find a trade you will be good at...
Seriously reconsider your choices here dont drop out. If you need help to pass most schools will find someone to help you out.
Good luck.

Don't drop out of school!!! It is a decision you will regret later on. But if you really want to quit, I think it is 16. Stay in school. Get that diploma!!! You can't even join the service without the diploma or at least a GED.

I agree if you are the one that is going to drop out do not do this unless you are going to go take your GED, however a diploma is better. If you can't deal then the age would be 16 in most states!

Not sure about nationally, but in Illinois it's 16. I do know that they also made it so that if you quit school you can't get your drivers license until you are 18 though.
