Regardless of your faith, your intentions are good and show a great deal of compassion. Hopefully others will see it as well and not berate you for the faith-based implication of the question.
Atheist, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist... all are words for different "humans". Treat each other as THAT first and don't turn away form the suffering of others when you can do a little to help.
Note to the poster: If you are serious and legitimate, make sure to contact the IRS and get a tax exempt certification so you don't pay taxes on the money - you WILL be held up to audit of what you do with it, so be VERY careful in your accounting.
