My family and I are planning to go to Hawaii (Probably Kona, but small possibility in Honolulu) and were wondering if there were cheap or decent places to go to shop and activities enjoy without spending an arm and a leg. I know Hawaii is expensive and a tourist area, but there must some activities and places to shop that are affordable. Would appreciate any insight.

Aloha Stadium & Kam Drive In Swap meet, (flea market), right across from Pearl Harbor & Arizona Memorial, Sat., Sun., Wed.,great deals on everything, barter like you're buying an automobile.Kona consists of Alii Drive, it's not that big, but I love it. It's the superbowl of big game fishing. (Honokahau Harbor) Couple miles North of Kona. Air conditioned 50-60 ft. fishing boats w/ videos taken of you, lunch provided if U want or bring your own, Nothing like fighting a 40 lb Mahimahi jumping out of the water, or a 2-400 lb. Marlin! What a rush. Or just go for the ride, lunch & cocktails & see the island from a different perspective, It's beautiful. Almost guarantee you'll get some action from the fish. If you have a kitchen in your room, don't shop in Waikiki, go about a mile or 2 to the regular supermarkets, Dai Ei, Foodland, or at least Food Pantry(a litle more expensive but right in Waikiki.I live in Waikiki & ride my bicycle to the grocery store. The Bus is $2 for adults...www.gohawaii.com (101 free things to do on Oahu, or under $10)or www.honolulu.com or www.midweek.com (free stuff to do, go hiking w/ the Sierra Club, $5-$10, check out ecotourism!

What do you define as cheap? Here is some practical Math - - - even going 'cheap' if you are not prepared to spendd a minimum of a hundred dollars a day per person then don't. Actually one should be prepared to spend five hundred a day if they want to buy nice gifts etc. At a fast food place expect to spend $5 to 10 Per Person per meal and that includes the value Menu. There are 'cheap' all you can eats for twenty dollars per person but most are forty per person and up! The cheapest thing will be the beach and hiking but after a while the kids might get bored. The Water Park on O'ahu wants 65$ and up per person. Keep it simple be prepared to spend hundred a day per person.

If you do alot, it will of course cost alot. The more things you do, if you are into the drinking scene, it will cost a bundle!!
ABC stores are really not all that expensive. you could also try out the Kmarts in Honolulu, to see how the deals are. The sales tax in Hawaii is 4.2% so that is not bad at all!!
For breakfast on Honolulu, go to Seaside Bar and Grill on Seaside and Kuhio Ave. They have good food at decent prices!!

"Pleasant Holidays" offers some pretty good deals. There is lots of free stuff to do around Kona. You can go snorkeling out side of Magic Sands Beach. Looking out to your left a couple of hundred feet is a nice little lava tube to free dive thru. City of Refuge is significant to understanding the Hawaiian culture; it used to be almost free. Snorkeling in Kealakakua Bay is great. There were some bamboo forests in Napapoo, maybe still there. If you pay and scuba dive Kona is great place. If you drive to the volcano that is free or used to be. Lots of hiking trails to old and new eruption sites. Have Fun!

If I were you I would rent a car and visit your local AAA or a place to get a map--trafficing hours are usually 6a-830a and 330pm-6pm so steer away from commutting those hours if possible but the islands are so beautiful that if you're good with maps and navigation you can do your own tours! (FYI--Don't spend the entire vacation in waikiki--that is the most priciest area we have...and Oahu is very diverse...and beautiful..).

YOu can try and of those websites that the others posted..the ohana chain of hotels usually has good prices but, it depends on what time of year you plan on going to oahu. I'd check out those hotels first...all are on the waikiki strip and are pretty nice.
