NO you still have to go back to the Social Security office and change your legal status with Social sec. You need to change it, they wont do it for you.

Only if it was a tax identification number and not a social security number. If your number begins with a 9 it is not a standard social security number.

It shouldn't. That number should follow you through the system. That is a part of them tracking your payment of taxes and moneys you receive from programs.

No, it does not. Once you have a number, it stays the same. They do issue a new card, if you request it, that doesn't say "for work purposes only".
