I just returned from a 9 week trip to Australia and New Zealand.
They're both great, but very different.
Australia is a big country, the size of the United States. Distances are great, and there's the same kind of pioneer, rough life style tradition that we had in the US. When you live a great distance from your nearest neighbor, visitors were welcome. I think this tradition had a lot to do with forming the openness of the Australian spirit.
New Zealand is a small, beautiful compact country, which is much more English oriented than Australia. They are very interested in having young people come to populate the country (there are many more sheep than people at present), but if you're old or retired, they're not interested.
Personally, I found Australia to be more international, outward and future looking, while New Zealand was more self contained and inward looking...which is natural considering how far away it is from other countries. I felt closer to the rest of the world in Australia, literally and physically, and that was important to me.
You need to travel to both before you decide what you want to do. What I gave you were my impressions, which were totally subjective...and yours would probably be totally different.

There is a friendly rivalry between N.Zealand and Australia, well I hope it's friendly!
Australia is a more rugged country, N.Zealand is more a landscape of rolling planes and lots and lots of sheep.
I have been to the North Island and being Australian found the N. Zealanders put a lot of **** on us. Some are downright rude to us. Luckily for us we take it with a grain of salt and laugh it off. It might be a touch of jealousy on their part.
There are many N.Zealanders living in Australia and I have never made them feel unwelcome. Australia is a friendly place with a lot of opportunity for those who put in the effort. We are a mixture of people from all over the world and that makes this country so very special. I have been all over the world and there is no place like Australia, it's the very best place you could live in. I was born here so I may be a little biased.

For American, i think Australia is better than new zealand, as new zealand is more towards British culture. Australia has more things to do than new zealand and also more Americans immigrate to Australia than new zealand. Australia's beaches is fun and at Xmas time and new year eve, Australia party mood is definitely more high than new zealand. There are more types of animals in Australia then in new zealand, like kangaroos, koala bears, wallabies, Tasmanian devils,duck-billed platypus etc., while new zealand , only the kiwi bird is more popular. The only two things in new zealand is better is the air is much more cleaner and fresher compared to Australia and you can catch more fishes and penguin (don't disturbed them) in new zealand (in wildlife) than in Australia (which is in zoo and aquarium of course). Overall, i think Australia is better than new zeal and. So enjoy!!!

NZ for sure however I could be biast cause I live here. Someone earlier said we are like the English down south, funny that considering they are mainly Scottish decedents. We are fun loving Kiwis. Also we don't have any dangerous animals that might eat you lol. We are proud of our New Zealand heritage. Don't take advise about our country from someone who has never been here. Check out this website and make a decision for yourself.

Despite the comments already made, I have to say NZ is better! But only just. Why? Because it is smaller, you can get around it much more easily, and there's certainly plenty of things to do.
But we just don't take any Tom, Dick or Harry here, so check out our immigration criteria first. See below. And perhaps come for a holiday, just to satisfy yourself that I'm not telling lies.
Oh, and despite the illegal US occupation of Iraq, we still like Americans!

i am american and i've lived in both and have to say that both are beautiful places to call home, but what makes me call Australia home is the amazing people i've lived here for about 2 years now and cannot picture myself anywhere else. there are no people like Australians, they are unbelievably warm and friendly and funny. not to say newzealanders aren't. to me australia is a place to create a home and a family, and NZ is a great place to visit on vacation
