Formatting toolbar is visible at Slide Sorter view - but buttons are disabled.

While your show is in progress, press P, PAGE UP, LEFT ARROW, UP ARROW, or BACKSPACE to Perform the previous animation or return to the previous slide

No, the formatting toolbar is not available in slide sorter view.

you can make the screen go black in a presentation by hitting the "b" key at any time.
