hurt?! localize? or generalize?
if generalize, hey do you floss? when you brush your teeth any bleeding? this is a sign of gingivitis! To make it stop hurting, brush your teeth twice a day, floss before bed and use mouthwash or warm salt water. you will see the big result in 2 weeks if you do your "home care"
If hurting behind the 2nd molars, which mean your wisdom teeth coming out. If see a flap there which is periocoronitis, "There" is the place you have to keep it very Clean. Food debris will stay there, debridement of the area and local irrigation with a chlorhexidine solution or warm salt warm will help.

Try and brush your teeth at least twice a day. Once you get used to brushing (with toothpaste of course) your gums will not hurt as much from brushing them, if that is what they hurt from.
If not, I don't know what to tell you.

Rinse with warm salt water. Avoid mouthwashes because most contain alcohol which will irritate your gums further.

hold some hydrogen peroxide in your mouth, and let it boil for a while. It boils the soreness out.
