I prefer a leather leash simply because I feel I'm more in control of my dog, and he is safer. If you have a big breed I recommend a choker collar, and a leather leash, or until he is trained, you can be pulled every which way! I have a big dog, and when he sees a squirrel, suddenly, he is taking ME for a walk! I did not get my dog until he was a year and a half old, and then it was harder to train him, but he has gotten better. There are even good web sites on puppy training, as well as good books. Good luck and enjoy your puppy!!

As long as the retractable leash has a locking mechanism on it, either should be fine, though if something did happen, you might end up fumbling the retractable one. And thank you very much for keeping your animal on a leash, whatever kind you choose to use! I had rotties for years, they were always well behaved, but I just can't stand it when other people let their smaller dogs run loose, it's like the little rabbitt at the track to a dog on a leash!

I believe they are both good leashes. The retractable leash can be used to control your dog in an emergency by using the button on the handle to either lock the length of the lead or to retract it if necessary. It's all a matter of personal preference.

Well, it depends really on where you are using it. Alot of times people who have retractable leashes have the dog 15 feet infront of them and are being walked and have no control. Though, if you are travling, flexis are great for potty breaks.
I have 2 Rottweilers and show them. I teach mine to heal, so my leashes are only a foot long. Having Rotties you want to make sure you have maximum control at all times for the dogs sake and yours. MAny people are afraid of Rotties and expessially one who isn't under control. Plus if your dog is healing nicely it looks good on the breed. lol
But, the leather won't break as easily.
It is really up to you. In my book you can never have too many leashes or collars. I have one for every type of event.
Somtimes a 6 foot leash is too long to hold all that in your hand.
Its whatever you prefer.

It probably depends where you are. If you are walking down the street with a lot of people, I would want my dog on a 6 ft lead so I do have the control.
If I'm walking my dog in a park or area where they can sort of 'roam free' I'd use the retractable one so they can trot around and get more exercise.
So....you are both right!

well we have both for my dog, he has a 16 ft retractable leash for fun trips like at the beach and stuff but he has his regular 6 ft leash for walks around the block and stuff, the 6 ft is best for keeping good control, I guess if you are someplace were there are not as many people around the retractable is OK, so I'm mixed because I have both but then my dog is a min pin/doxie

It's a matter of personal choice. Just remember that with a retractable lead, if the dog jerks, he can pull the retractable right out of your hand and take off running. A leather one you can put your hand through and have a better grip.

if your dog is also a big dog, like a rottie, i'd go with the heavy leather leash, or even a chain one, because those retractables can snap pretty easy.
i use the retractables, but i've just got little dogs... but even they've snapped those things before, when they've pulled too hard

You are, when the dog is in control, like with the retractable leash bad things can happen. Any leash where you have control on short notice is better.

well, you sound like you're trying to win an arguement. anyway, besides that i think it depends on the dog. if you have a huge dog and are expecting it to heel, then a 6 ft. leash would be best. but, a little dog that isn't expected to heel at all - retractable would definetly win.
