get something off their registry. or you can always get several sleepers. or a nice outfit (make sure you check months and season). you can create your own basket with ointments, shampoo, wash cloths, onesies, socks, teethers...etc. you can think ahead and get something for down the road. like leapfrog table http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000062XQ8/sr=8-1/qid=1155003255/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-2691496-7722564?ie=UTF8
whatever you do--gift receipt.

I usually like to give something that can be used a little later in the baby's life e.g. bath toys! They're quite cheap that you can get heaps and still not spend a lot of money but look as if you have!
Something I got for my soon to be born nephew is a pewter train money box - go to www.petersofkensington.com.au. They also have nice baby cutlery sets.
And by the way, never let someone else's taste dictate the gift you give them. It places too much pressure on you. Remember - its the thought that counts and if they can't handle that then that's their problem!

Get something for the mother/father to be like a manicure/pedicure or a gift card for dinner out at a restaurant. After the baby is born, that would mean more than a common gift at a baby shower.

Diapers. You can never go wrong with that. Also baby food. Other than that maybe like a baby kit like:
ear thermometer
baby nail trimmers
nasal syringe

Hi Nadia,
You could consider an heirloom item-a child's silver cup and spoon, or a silver comb set-perhaps a Gund bear along with a hand knitted sweater set.-Another item could be a designer diaper bag filled with top name baby care products.

I was going to say diapers, because they can never have enough. I promise. Maybe a specially made blanket or something instead or also?

Right now it's not what the parents taste is , it's what your pocket can afford.
