you will need a real good industrial bit. pay attention to your drill press and make sure it doesn't overheat. keep a few bits around incase one breaks or dulls out early. when you are drilling you want to drill a little and raise the bit out of the hole for a moment and put it back in. this helps the tip of the bit cool down and helps pull the extra shavings out. your going to need a drilling lubricant. make sure that your press is set to the proper RPM for that particular bit for that particular material.

First if you want it done right take what ever you are drilling to yooperpooper, as that person does it for a living. The second way is to use a cobalt drill, and go very slowly. Stainless steel is very hard as we all know. I am a guy that has no schooling, but learned to do it by do it. I've drilled a lot of stainless and it is not easy. So take your time, and use a cobalt drill. Or take it to the guy that does it for a living.

As long as it turns the bit, the power, (torque), at the drill is not a factor. 1. The bit you have is probably ruined by overheating. replace it. (See 3. below). 2. Do use water or cutting oil to cool your drill bit. 3. If you're drilling more than a very small hole, start with a small pilot bit to make the first hole, then follow with the larger full size bit.

If you are using the same bit all day long, have a batch of spares on hand. Never can tell when a drill bit might break or get stuck in the hole.

One problem you will have is the bit slipping (even in a drill press). Get a mallet and a strong steel punch to start an indentation for your bit to "ride" in as it begins cutting through the first few mm.

Good luck

You have to forgo precision if you need the work to be done fast.More over you need lots bits. So one best way (slow but very precise) is to make a 4mm copper tool & do EDM Spark erossion. You can make multiple copper electrodes & erode 2or 3 jobs @ a single time(depends on your job).

the fastest and best way is with a titanium nitride coated solid carbide bit. Use a milling machine for accuracy. don't trust john cobalt is added to tool steal to give it better wear characteristics. it still will not outperform solid carbide with TiN coating. I have been a machinist for 25 years, seven of them working for a pump manufacturer that used only 316 ss
